Sr. Electrical Test Engineer, Energy Products

| Job Category | Energy Engineering | | Location | Palo Alto, California | | Req. ID | 276144 | | Job Type | Full-time |

What to Expect

At Tesla Energy, shipping fast without compromising reliability means one thing: brilliant test automation. As a Senior Test Automation Engineer focused on high voltage power electronics, you'll design and own automated systems that validate Tesla's residential and industrial energy products — from concept silicon to global deployment. You write the frameworks that run thousands of tests while engineers’ sleep.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable automated test frameworks (Python/Pytest, Robot Framework, LabVIEW/TestStand) for high-voltage power electronics systems
  • Own end-to-end Automated Test Equipment development — from instrument driver abstraction to test orchestration, data capture, and report generation
  • Design reusable, modular test libraries for hardware bench testing and production line screening — enabling teams to spin up new test coverage quickly
  • Develop firmware and embedded test code for custom test fixtures and HIL setups — microcontroller programming (STM32, ESP32, or similar) in C/C++ for sensor sampling, relay control, safety interlocks, and real-time data streaming back to the host framework
  • Design and build custom electrical test fixtures — schematic capture and PCB layout (Altium/Cadence) for breakout boards, signal conditioning, load banks, and HV switching matrices; specify connectors, contactors, and wiring harnesses for repeatable bench and production interfaces
  • Integrate test suites into CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions) so every firmware or hardware revision is automatically validated against a reliability baseline before it reaches review, and automate HALT, ALT, and burn-in sequences — sequencing climate/vibration chambers, power supplies, and measurement instruments as a single orchestrated system
  • Build automated data acquisition pipelines feeding directly into reliability dashboards to expedite lifetime reliability estimates, degradation trends, and pass/fail analytics refreshed in real time
  • Apply ML-assisted anomaly detection to identify unit outliers during production screening and predict failure signatures before they reach the field
  • Continuously drive design risk burndown to ensure product reliability and durability; perform reliability testing for industrial and residential energy power converters
  • Determine component and system-level test solutions that optimize product reliability and durability through DFMEA-based risk mitigations, resource planning, and program scheduling; facilitate failure analysis to understand root causes and drive resolution for failures originating in testing

What You’ll Bring

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent experience
  • 3-10 years of hands-on experience in power electronics hardware design, design validation, hardware testing, mechanical system reliability, and durability testing
  • Knowledge of programming in scripting languages for test automation and data analysis/post-processing
  • Hands-on firmware development experience in C/C++ on bare-metal or RTOS microcontrollers (STM32, NXP, TI, ESP32, or similar)
  • Experience designing custom test fixtures and PCBs — schematic capture, layout, and bring-up of breakout boards, signal conditioning, and switching hardware
  • Experience working safely with high voltage equipment. Working knowledge of HV test instrumentation — hipot, IR, partial discharge, programmable AC/DC sources and loads, power analyzers
  • Experience specifying sensors for test instrumentation and utilizing data acquisition systems
  • Experience pro-actively owning and delivering test engineering projects within accelerated validation timelines
  • Proven ability to develop reliability and durability test setups, including environmental, mechanical, and electrical stress testing, highly preferred
  • Preferred to have experience of common automotive communication protocols (CAN, Ethernet)
