Mechanical Design Engineer, Connectivity

What to Expect

Tesla is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer in the Autopilot and Electronics Product Design team to work on connectivity modules (GNSS, Cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.). Vehicle autonomy and new connectivity standards require new mechanical solutions. Tesla is a unique place for a mechanical engineer to own mechanical designs from first principles to mass production. Looking for various experience levels - Senior, Staff etc.

What You’ll Do

  • Work closely with Antenna, Wireless and LV architecture teams to enable best packaging and implementation
  • Optimize position in the vehicle while considering antenna performances, thermal, grounding, volume, mass, assembly and more
  • Participate in prototype builds, component fabrication, testing and validation efforts
  • Own the design of all mechanical components of the connectivity modules such as PCBA outline, connector selection, Antenna, Heatsinks, Shield-cans, RF components and injection molded enclosures
  • Conduct mechanical design analysis including structural, tolerance, FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and design for assembly
  • Generate detailed 3D models, technical drawings, and documentation of mechanical designs using 3DX and collaborate with other cross-functional teams to take designs from prototype through production and deployment
  • Support development of engineering and reliability test plans, test data analysis, and troubleshooting of design issues and communicate with suppliers regarding DFM (Design for Manufacturing) feedback and support tooling and assembly bring up

What You’ll Bring

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in mechanical design
  • Experience in the development of Wireless/Antenna components
  • Proficiency in CAD software (CATIA/3DX preferred) for 3D modeling and drafting
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) tools (ANSYS preferred)
  • Experience taking designs from initial concept through to mass production
  • Basic understanding of electrical and thermal design fundamentals. Familiarity with PCBA, electronics packaging, Radio-frequencies & EMC
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to perform first principles analysis to ensure a successful design (physics, stress-strain, thermal, tolerance, cost and mass optimization, etc.)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams

  • $109,600 - $234,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
