Mechanical Design Engineer, Autonomous Charging
| Job Category | Charging | | Location | Palo Alto, California | | Req. ID | 256105 | | Job Type | Full-time |
What to Expect
We are re-envisioning what electric vehicle charging should look like in a fully autonomous world. Our team is operating at the intersection of vehicle, energy, and AI businesses to conceptualize, architect, design, and launch a revolutionary charging technology to fundamentally reshape the charging landscape and usher in the era of sustainable abundance.
In this role, you will work with a small, diverse, dedicated group of engineers to tackle novel problems in a high-visibility setting, where the only limitations are the laws of physics. There are no carryover constraints or prior art – everything you will work on is brand new and brimming with challenge and impact.
Your work will span the gamut of mechanical engineering disciplines. On any given day, you will be expected to contribute to and solve multifaceted design problems, leveraging statics and/or dynamics, thermals, mechanics, vibrations, robotics, and advanced manufacturing techniques to develop robust, innovative designs. You will work closely with vehicle engineering, powertrain, supercharger, and autopilot teams to ensure a cohesive, cross-functional product is delivered on time.
Strong fundamentals, a first-principles mindset, and the drive to own problems end-to-end are non-negotiable. Roles available at multiple seniority levels, e.g. Sr., Staff, etc.
What You’ll Do
- Design electromechanical assemblies for both vehicle and supercharger product lines, including actuators, thermal solutions, structural enclosures, and electrical interconnects
- Mechanical design analysis including thermal FEA / CFD, structures, kinematics, statics, and vibrations
- Collaborate with a diverse set of stakeholders to forge relationships, drive decisions, and integrate the assemblies you design into vehicle and supercharger architectures
- Solve complex packaging challenges that require high-voltage insulation, IP67+ sealing, EMI performance, mechanical shock / loading robustness while maintaining high-volume (1,000s / wk) manufacturability
- Own the cradle to high-volume manufacturing lifespan of your design / assembly / product
- Develop targeted, cohesive test plans and support execution of such tests at a system level
- Use CATIA 3DX to 3D model components, integrate systems, and create 2D drawings using GD&T
What You’ll Bring
- Demonstrated technical excellence (portfolio preferred) in mechanical design and analysis
- Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals and physics-based first-principles problem solving
- Knowledge of GD&T, finite element analysis, and design for reliability concepts
- Experience with CATIA V5 and/or V6 as well as PLM systems: Engineering changes, deviations, and BOM structuring
- Experience with analysis tools: MATLAB, Python, ANSYS, StarCCM+
- Experience with environmental, reliability, safety, and industry standard requirements for automotive, industrial, and infrastructure products
- Basic understanding of electrical design fundamentals — high-voltage isolation, power electronics, thermal management, and interconnect design are a plus
- Experience with high-volume manufacturing and automated assembly processes such as injection molding, stamping, die casting, fastening, dispensing, and joining
- Familiarity with PCBAs and PCBA-level components
- Strong organization, written, and verbal communication skills
