SoC/FPGA Engineer
Italy(Hybrid)
The NOKIA Optics Subsystems group develops the front-ends for coherent optical long-distance transmission modules to interconnect network nodes and data centers. We are expanding and looking for highly motivated and experienced engineers to join us to develop the next generations of transmission systems.
Within Optics Subsystems, the SoC (System-on-Chip) team members architect, specify, design and test the ASICs for the optical modules. Our main goal is to extend the optical reach and transmission bandwidth and at the same time reduce the power and floorspace needs by using the latest chip technologies.

Your responsibilities
As ASIC engineer involved in the architecture and development of sub-micron devices, your development tasks are highly demanding in technical and soft skills. You will be working in a culture of autonomy and individual responsibility as part of an international development team, building system-on-chip devices for coherent transmission systems.
This position is especially focused on design for Coherent Transmission ASIC devices
- Highly skilled ASIC Development Specialist with expertise in Transmission protocols adopted in Communication industry
- Proficient in developing complex ASIC designs for optical communication systems
- Experienced in RTL design and verification, with special focus on ensuring high-performance and low-power ASIC solutions.
- Proven track record of collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver ASIC projects on time and within budget.
- Adept at staying updated with industry and standard trends and technologies to drive innovation and optimize performance in Coherent Transmission ASIC.
- As member of the Framer development team, collaborate closely with ASIC synthesis and implementation team to optimize synthesis scripts and methodology aiming to enhance efficiency and performance of design.
- Collaborate closely with physical design teams to ensure successful handoff of synthesized designs.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior team members.
- Foster integration of AI into Framer development flow, aiming to increase efficiency and QoR of development process
- Select available intellectual properties to be integrated into our design as well as communication with third party IP suppliers
- Collaborate with systems engineering, hardware, software and firmware development teams and test engineering in international Nokia locations
Your skills and experience
Must have
- The position requires a Master’s degree or PhD in Electronic Engineering, Microelectronics, Telecommunication Engineering or equivalent.
- Knowledge about IEEE transmission standards (mainly but not only IEEE802.3) with focus on Ethernet rates above 100G and basic knowledge about other transmission standards like OIF, ITU-T
- Proven capability to translate standard and internal requirements into an optimized framer functional design architecture
- Strong knowledge and practical experience about ASIC design and verification flows, respective implementation tools (Synopsys, Mentor, Cadence), the related design languages (VHDL, Verilog, System Verilog), script programming (TCL, Python) and overall development environment
- Experienced in RTL design and verification, with special focus on ensuring high-performance and low-power ASIC solutions. Advanced experience in UVM verification environment will be considered a plus.
- Basic knowledge of Error correction coding theory and algorithms
- Basic understanding of firmware development, software structures and methods (C/C++, development of drivers and APIs for the design blocks). Advanced experience in this area will be considered a plus.
- Good communication skills, fluent written and spoken English (required), with a strong interest to collaborate with international partners.
It would be beneficial if you also had
- Inter-disciplinary and inter-cultural collaboration experience
- Deep understanding of synthesis and physical implementation concepts to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of collaboration with synthesis and implementation team
- Knowledge in LINUX-based systems IT infrastructure management
- Basic knowledge about coherent optical transmission systems and their components, transmission theory and algorithms, forward error correction, modulation formats and their implementation
