Staff Software Engineer, Core Services
| Job Category | Engineering & Information Technology | | Location | Fremont, California | | Req. ID | 268649 | | Job Type | Full-time |
What to Expect
Tesla’s core services team builds systems that orchestrate customer flows for robotaxi, charging, over the air updates, subscriptions, electric, lease/loan, roaming in charging, NACS and other ownership related products for both B2C and B2B customers.
These systems are production-critical and directly impact customer experience, revenue and need to be optimized for uptime, and scalability.
We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to work on Robotaxi and Charging primarily. You will own the technical direction, write production code, and may lead a team of engineers while scaling the system to support more complex flows. The ideal candidate combines deep expertise in backend systems with hands-on distributed systems experience, strong product instincts, and an AI-forward mindset.
This position is based in Fremont, CA.
What You’ll Do
- Own the technical direction and design for backend services integrating with internal and external platforms
- Lead and grow a team of engineers: mentor on systems thinking, review technical approaches, and set the bar for quality
- Write production code in Go — this is a hands-on technical leadership role, not a management position
- Drive architectural decisions across the core services stack: Go, REST, gRPC, Kafka, Elasticsearch, Click house, MySQL, and Kubernetes
- Identify opportunities to apply AI and machine learning to price optimization algorithms for Robotaxi, other products
What You’ll Bring
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, with 4+ years focused on backend distributed systems
- Demonstrated experience building and operating distributed systems in production - event-driven architectures, message brokers, service decomposition, and the operational realities of running them
- Strong proficiency in Go; working familiarity with the broader stack: REST, Dotnet, gRPC, Kafka, SQL (MySQL), Docker, Kubernetes, and dotnet
- Experience shipping systems into real production environments, not just research or simulation
- Track record of technical leadership: setting architectural direction, mentoring engineers, and driving technical decisions across teams
- Strong product sense with the ability to understand user pain, domain constraints, and independently drive toward a better product
- Experience with real-time or near-real-time systems - you understand latency, throughput, and reliability constraints
- An AI-forward mindset with a drive to incorporate AI-driven approaches into product development, whether that is ML for price optimization, LLMs for tooling, or AI-assisted development workflows
