Join Expedia’s Insurance and Assurance team, where we empower travelers with peace of mind through purpose-built insurance products. We are seeking a backend-leaning full-stack engineer (≈70% backend) who thrives in high-scale, distributed systems and enjoys solving complex business problems in fintech and insurance domains. This role is ideal for engineers who: Have experience building financial, insurance, or pricing systems at scale Enjoy working on 0→1 products and rapid experimentation cycles Can navigate cross-team dependencies and system orchestration Are energized by fast delivery timelines and high business impact In this role, you will: Design, build, and operate high-throughput backend services that power insurance and fintech products across the Expedia platform Lead and contribute to complex, cross-team initiatives that require coordination across dozens of systems (pricing, checkout, booking, servicing, etc.) Develop scalable APIs, pricing engines, and data models to support dynamic and synthetic product offerings Contribute to zero-to-one product launches and rapidly iterate post-launch to expand capabilities across brands and markets Write clean, maintainable, and testable code with a strong focus on performance, reliability, and scalability Troubleshoot and resolve issues within distributed, high-scale systems Leverage AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude) to accelerate development and delivery Participate in an on-call rotation (~once per quarter) supporting production systems Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; or equivalent related professional experience. 5+ years of professional software engineering experience Strong experience building backend services and APIs in distributed systems Experience with system design for scalable, high-availability platforms Proficiency in Kotlin or Java Experience working in cloud-based environments Familiarity with AI-assisted development workflows or AI/ML-enabled systems Preferred Qualifications: Experience in FinTech, InsurTech, or pricing/financial systems at scale Proven experience building or contributing to 0→1 products or major feature launches Experience working on cross-domain systems with many upstream/downstream dependencies Ability to operate effectively in fast-paced, execution-focused environments with tight timelines Strong understanding of pricing strategies, risk systems, or transactional platforms Demonstrated ability to improve system scalability, reliability, and operational performance Full-stack capability (backend-heavy) with the ability to contribute to frontend when needed Strong problem-solving mindset with a business and customer impact orientation Please note that this role is only available in Seattle, WA, in alignment with our flexible work model, which requires employees to be in the office at least three days a week. We are unable to offer relocation assistance for this role. The total cash range for this position in Seattle is $146,000.00 to $204,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $233,500.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role. Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
