Job Description and Responsibilities:
Our optical fiber plant is specialized in high volume manufacturing of glass preforms, optical fibers and optical fiber assemblies. The Controls Engineer will design, install and maintain control systems of our large-scale production equipment including Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD) lathes, overcollapse lathes, fiber draw towers and other pieces of equipment used to produce specialty optical fibers and fiber assemblies. This role works with a cross-discipline team of Mechanical, Electrical and Process Engineers as well as collaborating with cross-functional teams in order to support all aspects of the optical fiber manufacturing process. The main job responsibilities include:
- Design, develop, integrate, troubleshoot and debug the robotic, PLC, and vision system programs for manufacturing equipment
- Deliver controls systems with structured software development practices to ensure safe, fast and efficient systems completion
- Design electrical control panels, develop implementation plans and coordinate execution
- Work daily with the manufacturing and equipment teams onsite, support needed repairs, suggest equipment and/or control system improvements to further stabilize manufacturing processes
- Plan for preventative maintenance
- Develop operating procedures and training material for Engineering and Production teams
- Effectively work with external machine builders and system integrators for detailed designs, builds and integrations
Education AND Work Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Systems & Control Engineering or other relevant degree
- Strong electro-mechanical skills with demonstrated experience in the successful implementation of automation, robotics, and control system integration technologies in manufacturing processes.
- Strong team player who takes personal ownership for their areas of responsibility
- Capable of executing project assignments with minimal supervision
- Effective problem solving and decision-making skills, with focus on safety
- Energetic and highly motivated; high level of organization; able to multitask on multiple projects
