The Akamai Network Engineering team designs, automates, and supports the global network powering Akamai's products and services. Using advanced technologies, this team ensures optimal connectivity and performance for customers and the compute platform.

Backbone Network Engineering focuses on backbone and edge connectivity. This skilled team builds, maintains, and configures infrastructure supporting Akamai's platform, which carries 20% of global web traffic.#CoreIPNetworking.

What you will do

As a Network Engineer II, you will lead efforts in designing and implementing a global backbone network infrastructure. You'll play a key role in shaping the backbone while addressing complex issues in edge and MPLS routing. Your work will ensure scalability, reliability, and security across a multi-vendor environment.

This role is budgeted and only available in Costa Rica.

As a Network Engineer II, you will be responsible for:

• Scaling the Global Backbone: Design, deploy, and maintain Akamai's massive-scale backbone while ensuring maximum network uptime and optimal traffic engineering.
• Optimizing Internet Routing: Manage large-scale exterior BGP routing architectures, peering relationships, and transit provider configurations for fast data delivery.
• Provisioning Capacity: Provision new backbone capacity, Private Network Interconnects (PNIs), and routers, while executing major infrastructure project implementations.
• Writing, testing, and deploying network configuration changes using Akamai's automation framework across both lab and production environments.
• Vendor-Debugging: Conduct deep protocol-level debugging in collaboration with hardware vendors to resolve highly complex network infrastructure issues.
• Data-Driven Optimization: Leverage network telemetry and internal databases to drive data-informed decisions regarding global network performance optimization.
• Partnering Cross-Functionally: Collaborate with network architecture, automation, infrastructure, and NOC teams to maintain high network availability and reliability.

Do what you love

To be successful in this role you will:

• Have a High school / Bachelor Degree or its or equivalent
• Demonstrate 5+ of relevant experience with a background in Computer Science or equivalent practical expertise in the field.
• Showcase practical expertise in BGP, IS-IS, MPLS, Traffic Engineering, and RSVP within a large service provider environment.
• Scale Architecture: Display proven experience in IP network design and routing architecture at scale within ISPs, content providers, or CDNs.
• Demonstrate exceptional communication abilities to foster trust and collaborate efficiently within a diverse, cross-functional international team.
• Demonstrate expertise in service provider network methodologies through holding a JNCIP-SP certification or possessing equivalent knowledge in the field.
